CopBlocking in Zanesville, OH This Friday Night (Mar. 13)

For the last month I’ve been hanging out with DEO – Greater Cleveland CopBlock – in Parma OH, just outside of Cleveland. We’ve attended a Tamir Rice vigil, a Jacob Crawford Protest, CopBlocked in the street of Parma and more because Ohio is a buzzing with police activity of all kind. Not only does it have the most active CopBlock Group (IMO, don’t be offended) in the US(s)A but the cops from Cleveland to Cincinnati seem to run amuck these days.

COP STALKS TAMIR RICE MEMORIAL:

That’s why individuals who believe that ‘Badges Don’t Grant Extra Rights” will come from all over Ohio to meet up at Tee Jay’s Country Place, in Zanesville, OH at 7:30 pm this Friday (the 13th – of March). There’s a newly formed Zanesville CopBlock and a few other solid folks from other Ohio based CopBlock groups near by, so the turnout should be a good one. After we eat dinner and see how many people decided to attend this event, we’ll make a plan of action for the night. We can head into popular areas of town and film traffic stops. Or I’ll bring my Stormtrooper costumes along and we can have some fun with those, below is the Facebook event hosted via CopBlock’s Facebook page.

It should be a good time and provide valuable networking regardless of turnout. We look forward to seeing you there.

Keeping up with all the police related stories, events and more can be a difficult tasks. Therefore, with the intention of keeping the readers of CopBlock.org informed about the most recent stories, videos and happenings – not only at CopBlock.org but the extended CopBlock offshoots as well – we’ve decided to start a “CopBlock Week in Review” series. Each week a CopBlock contributor will publish a post that highlights the blogs published at the site throughout the week, short stories about other CopBlocker activities and more. So without further ado, lets get into this week’s review.

WHAT OTHER COPBLOCK OFFSHOOT ARE UP TO:

Texas CopBlockers, via Brettsanders.me, broke a story about a pregnant woman in Texas being physically assaulted by cops in Quinlan.

“It all started when one CPS bureaucrat knocked on the door of the residence and directed two Hunt County Sheriff deputies to display a court order to come inside and interview the children and family. The owner of the house asked to see the court order again since it was quickly flashed and not properly displayed.

According to the homeowner, as soon as she requested to view the court order a second time “the police forced their way into the house.”  She was pinned in the corner of the kitchen and that’s where the video starts. You can clearly see the 38 week pregnant women as she screams for help and reminds them she’s pregnant”

Sheriff Randy Meeks would later hold a press conference and, to the amusement of everyone attending, claim the pregnant woman reached for the officers gun.

DONNYBROOK AT ARIZONA WALMART BETWEEN IDAHO FAMILY AND POLICE, ONE CIVILIAN DEAD (VIDEO)

Here’s a video we found of a family brawling with the cops at a WalMart in Arizona. The police show up en masse and try to separate a father from his family. He doesn’t take it well and starts yelling. The police escalate the situation, and someone ends up dead.

ADEMO ARRESTED IN ZANESVILLE

Ademo Freeman. CopBlock Founder, blogger, and motherfucker was arrested today for contempt of court in Zanesville, Ohio. He was there to see about a Zanesville CopBlocker, who was arrested for obstruction for filming last night. The bailiff in his Bambuser video challenged him to show him where he had walked in the courtroom with a hat on. This created an argument about filming in the courtroom to which Ademo responded, “I sued the last mother fucker who told me I couldn’t record in a courtroom, you wanna be next?”

THUG COPS ASSAULT TEENAGERS, TRY TO DELETE FOOTAGE FROM PHONE

Police in Virginia Beach, VA have been caught on video assaulting two teenagers after pulling them over for a broken license plate light. The cops subsequently tried, and failed, to delete the footage captured via cell phone.

The cops claimed that they could smell marijuana, so had probable cause to detain 18-year-old Courtney Griffith and her 17-year-old friend Brandon, remove them from the vehicle and search it.

The quick thinking Griffith pressed record on her iPhone and placed it on the dashboard, capturing the entire incident.

WEEKLY CORRUPT COPS STORIES

Each week we gather stories about corrupt cops across the country published weekly by StopTheDrugWar.org. Here are a couple stories from the previous week.

Former feds charged with stealing Silk Road bitcoin

A Secret Service agent and a DEA agent with lead roles in the investigation to take down the Internet drug bazaar Silk Road allegedly stole proceeds from the underground site and hid their booty in offshore accounts.

Former DEA agent Carl Force, 46, of Baltimore, the task force agent charged with going undercover to communicate online with Silk Road operator Ross Ulbricht, known as Dread Pirate Roberts, allegedly used several online aliases to extort hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of bitcoin from Ulbricht, according to a criminal complaint unsealed Monday. Force is charged with money laundering, wire fraud, theft and conflict of interest.

HPD OFFICER ARRESTED ON THE JOB, SUSPENDED

An HPD officer was arrested on the job Tuesday, part of Drug Enforcement Agency investigation out of New Orleans.

Houston police arrested Noe Juarez Tuesday morning during roll call at the central command station at 61 Riesner, according to the FBI. The FBI and DEA were working together in an alleged federal drug probe, serving a warrant out of New Orleans.

Charges against him are sealed until after Juarez’s first court appearance, but sources say Juarez was caught escorting a drug cartel across state lines, and apparently he was paid some big money. There are a number people, including law enforcement officers, being investigated, but the FBI wouldn’t comment at this time.

Former Baltimore County police cadet gets 4 years for stealing drugs from evidence room

A former Baltimore County police cadet has been sentenced to 4 years in prison for stealing drugs from the department’s evidence room.

Twenty-one-year-old Nicholas Ishmael of Parkville was sentenced Wednesday in Baltimore County Circuit Court.

Ishmael pleaded guilty in January to felony theft and possession with intent to distribute Oxycodone.

To help keep folks up on all the police related stories, events and more each week we post a “CopBlock Week in Review”. Each week the review highlights the stories published at CopBlock.org, short stories about other CopBlock activities, this week’s corrupt cop stories and more. So without further ado, lets get into this week’s review.

FEATURED COPBLOCK GROUP:

Ohio Copblockers have been really holding the police accountable this past week (and a little into the week before). Starting with the arrest of myself, which lead into a night of CopBlocking in Zanesville, and concluding with the CopBlock of a Cleveland Checkpoint (see video below), see here, Ohio CopBlockers (especially DEO, Jason, Tom, Lisa and myself) have been quite busy. On top of these great activities we’ve also CopBlocked Downtown Cleveland and a Medina Checkpoint a few weeks ago.

If you’re in Ohio, get connected with GreaterCleveland CopBlock; Zanesville CopBlock; Youngstown CopBlock and more via the CopBlock Groups page.

TOP COPBLOCK.ORG STORIES THIS WEEK:

I PULLED OVER A COP TONIGHT: Adam Bocanegra gave a local sheriff a taste of his own medicine. After witnessing the sheriff speed down the road Adam followed him in order to issue him a ticket. After a short interaction, Adam decided to give the sheriff a warning, no joke, see for yourself here.

MOTEL 6 WILL GIVE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION TO THE POLICE: Did you know that when you check into some Motel 6 locations they might be giving your personal information to the police, without your knowledge! That’s the news coming from Motel 6 Executives our of Rhode Island this week and after breaking the story, found that others might be doing the same, see here. So make sure you ask when checking into a hotel if your information is going to be given to the police without cause.

COPBLOCKING THE ZANESVILLE POLICE: After I was released early from the Zanesville City jail about 15 – 20 of us spent Saturday night CopBlocking the Zanesville police. The video below has nearly 10,000 views this week and is probably due to Herb’s raw nature in dealing with the police. This isn’t the last you’ll hear from Herb or Zanesville, as I plan to spend the rest of the month in the area helping Herb get his cameras back and further hold the ZPD accountable.

THIS WEEK’S CORRUPT COP STORIES:

Each week share the stories about corrupt cops across the country published weekly by StopTheDrugWar.org. Here are a couple stories from the previous week.

In Towson, Maryland, a former Baltimore County police cadet was sentenced last Wednesday to four years in prison for stealing drugs from the department evidence room. Nicholas Ishmael, 21, had pleaded guilty in January to felony theft and possession of oxycodone with the intent to deliver. He had been arrested last June after an investigation into missing drugs pointed toward him. He was carrying $40,000 in cash when arrested.

In Frankfort, Kentucky, a former Franklin County narcotics officer was sentenced Monday to 16 months in prison for stealing cash, jewelry, and gift cards from drug dealers. Matthew Christian Brown, 32, was the county sheriff’s lead narc until December 2012 and enriched himself during drug busts. In one August 2012 case, he confiscated guns, drugs, and $32,000 in cash, but only logged the guns, drugs, and $18,000 into evidence, keeping the other $14,000. In another case, he stole an $11,000 ring and $3,000 watch from a drug dealer. He kept the ring, but sold the watch back to the dealer for $800 and kept the cash. He was charged with embezzlement, illegally distributing anabolic steroids, wire fraud, and lying to the FBI.

In Titusville, Florida, a former Titusville police officer was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in federal prison for participating in a drug deal. Richard Irizarry, 46, went down after befriending a DEA snitch and telling him he wanted to get into the drug business. Irizarry also helped the informant avoid detection by DEA officers. He was charged with attempting to aid and abet the distribution of cocaine and was found guilty in January.

Meet Jon McCoy, Zanesville Ohio Police Officer

$

0

I recently have been spending my time in Zanesville, Ohio thanks to the police officers here who like to cage people for filming them and a judge who caged me for saying “mother fucker.” Since the CopBlocking Zanesville and Meet Herb videos have come out the Zanesville CopBlock Facebook page has been blowing up. Most of the attention is good but some is not and several Zanesville CopBlockers have reported to me that they have been facing harassment by ZPD. The Zanesville CopBlock founder, Darcie, had one ZPD supporter give her a shoulder check when she was picking up her child from school. Meanwhile, Herb is fielding phone calls from people saying, “They’re going to get him” and more to his home phone. One of those calls may have came from of a local judge and I was even present during another one of these harassing phone calls.

I’m not surprised by this at all, this is how the police (and most government agents in fact) react to those who question their actions. Since they are highly trained in the use of force, and not social communication, or problem solving tactics, this type of reaction is what I expected. What I didn’t expect was to be given a glance into one of Zanesville’s Finest via Facebook, which is what happened when I woke up this morning to an anonymous submission with the following picture:  image11

There was also a short message that stated, “This is Jon McCoy’s Facebook page and he’s openly supporting domestic violence. If you don’t know Jon, he’s the officer recently featured in some of your recent videos from Zanesville.” Upon receiving this message I thought it would be worth taking a peek at Jon’s Facebook page. What I found was pretty telling of the mindset this officer has.

From Jon’s public – as I didn’t have to friend request him to see his timeline – Facebook page I took the following screenshots. Check them out and ask yourself, is this the type of guy you want protecting you?

JonMc2 JonMc3 JonMc4 JonMc1Mcoy6

Now I’m all for freedom of speech and standing for what you believe in, obviously. Yet, some serious consideration has to be given to the root cause of these posts. Was McCoy merely giving me lip service when I ran into him the night I went out CopBlocking in Zanesville (see here)? He claimed to be in support of people’s rights, he attempted to portray himself as a tolerable, reasonable cop who’s spent most his life in a uniform fighting for ‘our rights.’ He gave stories and examples to counter the claims of locals, particularly Herb, who claim he’s ‘put his hands on them’ in the past.

Maybe those making such accusations were right because according to Jon’s Facebook post, he seems to be an angry person with violent tendencies. Sharing content that states, “Make a difference in the world, double tap a terrorist” or “Some people remind me of old TV sets. You have to hit them a few times until they get the picture.” Is this really how McCoy feels problems should be addressed? By shooting people in the head – twice, or smacking them until they get the picture?

mcoy7Is this the mentality the city of Zanesville seeks in their police employees? Does Jon have anger issues? How many complaints have been filed against him since he’s been a cop? Maybe this is why his children live in Newark, OH (presumably with their – less aggressive – mother) and not with him? I don’t know, but I do know that the next time I see Jon McCoy out on patrol in Zanesville, I’ll have my camera and start filming immediately. He might treat me like an old TV and give me a few smacks until I get ‘his’ picture. Or he could go as far as to ‘double tap’ two bullets into my head thinking I’m his idea of terrorist. I hpoe none of that happens but I’m going to be prepared, as the information is right here at our finger tips, this cop has some issues. You’ve been warned.

WHAT OTHER COPBLOCK OFFSHOOT ARE UP TO:

Larry Freeman is an active Cop Blocker in the Ohio Valley region, on April 24 Larry went to the Federal Building in Wheeling, WV and began a First Amendment Audit by walking around the building filming different things and was not bothered by security at all. But when he went further down the street to do the same at the Courthouse/PD he was almost immediately approached by a US Marshall.

Larry came off kind of lucky as the Marshall was never hostile towards Larry and remained respectful despite refusing to identify himself. When Larry asked if he was being detained the Marshall informed him he was not and Larry simply walked away and told the man to search YouTube later to find out exactly what he was doing.

Larry only asks one thing of people supporting what he did:

Contact US Marshal Gary Gaskins at the Northern District office and ask about their policy of marshals identifying themselves. Ask why they would bother someone videotaping a building when the same footage is readily available from google maps and google street view.

Capital City CopBlock

Also in this week is CopBlock.org contributor Adam Rupeka of Capital City Copblock in New York

On May 1, Adam went to the DEA office in Latham, NY to also do a 1st Amendment Audit and was approached by two agents who started asking questions and treating Adam as if he was a terrorist threat. But he quickly shot that question down by trying to ask them if the DEA had ever been targeted by terrorists to which they only responded “Drug dealers target us” and also gave the usual “We are worried about the safety of our undercover agents being spotted on video” as if undercover agents are dumb enough to drive right up to the DEA office while they are undercover.

Video Shows Officer Break Down Door, Release K9 On Seated Man With Hands Raised

One thing police officers love to tell you is that if you just comply with them then you won’t get hurt, they spew the same nonsense anytime a use of force case makes the news and there is public outrage over the case.

Well Lee Hoogveldt of West Jordan, Utah found out that isn’t always the case. When police knocked in his door in March of 2013 they found Lee sitting on his couch and after some commands from the officer he raised his hands in surrender. All should be fine then you would think as he is complying, the one thing they say to do to avoid being hurt by officer. Well it was at this point that an officer released the K9 and the dog began chewing on Lee’s face for the next 15 seconds. While the dog is still chewing on his face another officer drags him into another room and begins handcuffing him face down.

The bodycam video below was released as part of a lawsuit against the PD:

Meet Jon McCoy, Zanesville Ohio Police Officer

Our own Ademo Freeman has been spending quite a bit of time in Zanesville, Ohio lately after his arrest for contempt of court. There has been much action between the police supporters in the city and the CopBlockers while this has been going on but ont thing that shocked Ademo was when we received a submission from someone including a link to Zanesville PD officer Jon McCoy’s personal facebook page that included some pretty shocking pictures he has posted that support domestic violence.

It’s people like Jon that are attracted to the power given to the job of Police Officer and I myself am not shocked at all to find someone like this working for a Police Department. Is this the kind of people you want charged with protecting you and holding all that power?

Click the heading to read the entire article and see more screenshots from this disgusting officer as he shares his viewpoints about violence openly with the public.

WEEKLY CORRUPT COPS STORIES

Each week we gather stories about corrupt cops across the country published weekly by StopTheDrugWar.org. Here are a couple stories from the previous week.

In Texarkana, Texas, a Bowie county jail guard was arrested last Wednesday after getting caught trying to smuggle marijuana into the jail inside a bag of Cheetos Puffs. The unnamed 19-year-old guard went for a break and was searched upon returning to the jail. He has been charged with possession of prohibited substances inside a correctional facility.

An East Texas correctional officer has been arrested for trying to smuggle marijuana into the facility via a bag of Cheetos Puffs.

Bowie County chief deputy Jeff Neal says the 19-year-old officer was searched after returning from a break just after midnight Tuesday. Neal says everyone and items always are searched before entering the facility.

A second officer found inside of the bag a purple object which contained the marijuana and tobacco.

Neal says a sheriff’s deputy was called to the center and arrested the 19-year-old for prohibited substances in a correctional facility. The correctional officer only had been employed for about one month before his arrest.

Neal says an investigation is ongoing.

In Wilburton, Oklahoma, a former Latimer County sheriff’s deputy was arrested last Wednesday for stealing drugs from the evidence room. Bobby Joe Eubanks went down after the sheriff asked the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to look into missing drug evidence. Eubanks had been in charge of the evidence room before he was fired earlier this year, and the sheriff said he had found drugs in Eubanks’ official vehicle while cleaning it. Eubanks admitted to twice stealing meth evidence and said he used it to cope with PTSD from his service in Afghanistan.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents have arrested a former Latimer County sheriff’s deputy for stealing drug evidence while working as a county deputy, a news release says.

The Latimer County sheriff requested OSBI to investigate missing drug evidence from the department’s evidence room, OSBI says.

The sheriff said he found drug evidence inside former deputy Bobby Joe Eubanks’ patrol vehicle when the sheriff was cleaning the vehicle.

The sheriff recently had terminated Eubanks, a news release says, and at the time Eubanks was terminated, he was in charge of the department’s drug evidence room.

A release says the OSBI agent assigned the case tracked the drug evidence and determined it had been sent to the OSBI laboratory for testing in 2011. At that time, an OSBI chemist reportedly determined the drugs contained methamphetamine.

OSBI says Eubanks admitted to stealing drug evidence two times when interviewed by agents.

Eubanks claimed he needed meth to help him cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He had been deployed to Afghanistan while in the Army National Guard prior to his employment with the sheriff’s office.

Eubanks was arrested outside the Latimer County Sheriff’s Office in Wilburton on Thursday afternoon.

Zanesville Cop Block is in the news again as Ademo has been spending lots of time there due to his contempt of court case. He was there to support local Cop Blocker Herb Newton who was arrested for obstruction of justice while filming police and his his neighbors. While he was in police custody though his footage was deleted but thankfully recovered.

In the video below you’ll see Officer Tignor and Moore arrest Herb for obstruction of justice on April 9th, 2015. The officers claim that he was interfering with their investigation and that a woman was having issues describing her accusations to them due to Herb’s recording. Below is the video footage of that arrest, as you watch it, try to pinpoint where Herb is obstructing the investigation or any time where he doesn’t comply with the officers orders.

Attempt At Controversy with Anti-NYPD Shirt Draws Unexpected Support

Russ Wishtart made a t-shirt to highlight abuses by the NYPD and then wore it around the city and got some unexpected reactions.

NYPD terrorists

Every single interaction was a positive one.

People stopped me and asked various questions and made comments.  One question that came up several times was, “Hey, where did you get that shirt?  I want to buy one.”  I wish I could have told them where to buy one, but like I said I made the shirt myself.

One type of comment took the form of “hey man, that’s a great shirt” followed by them telling me a story about how they were harassed/arrested/roughed up by the NYPD.

I had to take two trains to get to the snooker club, so I was standing on two separate subway platforms waiting for the J and the N.  On two occasions, I saw someone from across the platform waving at me.  I took my headphones out to hear them say “great shirt!” and “awesome shirt man!”  These were the only times that anyone has made contact with me from across a subway platform (about 30 feet away).

One guy was banging on the window on the M when it stopped at Essex St..  He gave me a big thumbs up.

Seems like Russ has pretty good support if he wishes to selling these shirts around NYC

LAPD “Justify” Shooting Unarmed Man Despite Chiefs Doubts

Michael Heise had the story about Brendan Glenn, who was killed by police Los Angeles during an altercation that happened after Brendan was accused of getting into a physical altercation with a bouncer.

Video of the incident has yet to be made public but viewers 0f the video gave their own account

LAPD reports that officers had talked to Glenn after he was seen “harassing customers” in the area. At this point, Glenn began walking towards the Venice boardwalk, and the officers went back to their patrol car. Shortly after, it is reported that Glenn was involved in a “physical altercation” with a bouncer, cops moved in to detain Glenn. Video exists of what happened between the officers and Glenn but it has not been made public. Sources who have seen the tape say that two officers were able to successfully subdue Glenn and bring him to the ground. Then, for no apparent reason, one of the officers gets up and steps back and shoots Glenn. The video, as well as the names of the officers involved in the shooting, are being withheld.

Glenn was unarmed. Even the Chief of Police, Charlie Beck, upon seeing the video, conceded that there does not seem to be a good reason as to why officers shot this man. As shown in aCNN Video Report, Beck is quoted as saying: “Any time an unarmed person is shot by a Los Angeles police officer, it takes extraordinary circumstances to justify that, and I have not seen those extraordinary circumstances at this point”

Cleveland Police Discrimination Lawsuit Opens The Books

$
0
0

cleveland-police-department-copblockNine of the thirteen officers involved in the murder of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams have filed a discrimination lawsuit last year against the city of Cleveland. They have inadvertently caused an additional problem for the Cleveland police, because a judge has ruled that Cleveland must open the books on police involved shootings from 2007-2012. They will have to show how many police involved shootings there were in that period and the discipline handed out. Some of the 13 include officers that refused to testify against Micheal Brelo at his trial that is currently ongoing. Cleveland Scene reports:

…as tone-deaf as the lawsuit is — it was filed just days after Cleveland police officer Timothy Loehmann shot and killed Tamir Rice and just before the Department of Justice released a summary of their damning investigation into the department — even more information showing the inner workings of how the Cleveland Police Department reacts following police-involved shootings will be included in the court file (these records are already public record, technically, but it takes months and months for a reporter to get records on even a single shooting).

Lawyers for the officers initially asked for the city to release 13 years of police shooting records — including the ethnicity of the police officer who shot and their discipline and/or reassignment records following that. The lawyers are trying to find correlation between the race of the officers who shoot black people and what happens to them afterwards to prove that these “non-African American” officers were treated slightly worse when they shot black people.

A federal judge initially ruled last month that the department must provide shooting records (including the race of the officer) and disciplinary records for police shootings that resulted in death for the past five years. But after a motion filed by the officers’ lawyer, a judge ruled that last week that records of police shootings that didn’t result in death will be included, too.

Malissa Williams & Timothy Russell

Malissa Williams & Timothy Russell

So now Cleveland has to open the books. What does this mean for an already torn city? The protests around Cleveland have been tame by the standards set by Ferguson and Baltimore, so time will tell. In Beaver Creek Ohio, the protests have been peaceful and, in my opinion Beaver Creek has more of a right (for lack of a better word) to riot than any other city, because John Crawford was murdered for the routine act, or crime, according to Beaver Creek police, of shopping in Wal-Mart! They should be up in arms! Not that I condone rioting, but I would understand it coming from a place where someone was murdered for shopping, as opposed to the rioting happening because of circumstances surrounding events in other cities.

This lawsuit was filed in between the Tanisha Anderson, and Tamir Rice’s murders, and just before the Department of Justice Report. These are some unintended consequences, but should serve as a wake up call to the people living in and around Cleveland that praise the Cleveland police, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary that Cleveland police are not held accountable for killing people. We have no less than four out of the six high profile Ohio cases involving police shootings, here in Cleveland. The more Ademo and I travel around Ohio, we see the facade fall from police departments all over Ohio. Most recently in Lima and Zanesville Ohio, where police lie in court and get away with it, even after its proven they lied, and where they delete video evidence after arresting people for filming them. Instead we live in denial! Time to stop the copsuckin’ Ohio!

The Zanesville Police Saga: Stomping Out Freedom of Speech & Lacking Accountability

$

A little over a week ago, I blogged about Officer Tignor and Moore of the Zanesville (OH) police department, who arrested Herb Newton, life long resident of Zanesville and CopBlocker, for “obstruction of justice.” In that post, I explained how we obtained the footage from the Zanesville Law Director’s Office:

It took us nearly three weeks to get the cameras back from the city prosecutor. We achieved this by first asking for discovery in Herb’s case, followed by a specific request to the prosecutor for copies of the footage and/or cameras themselves and finally a motion to compel (as our second letter was never addressed) with the court. Before the motion to compel could be ruled on, the prosecutor told Herb he could come and reclaim his property. We went to the courthouse to retrieve Herb’s cameras and quickly noticed that one of his cameras (the backup) seemed to be missing the last file. His other camera appeared to have all of the footage on it and this immediately struck me as odd. Why delete one perspective, but not the other, especially since the same person was holding both cameras? It didn’t add up, so I attempted to recover/repair the file.

Herb Newton

Herb Newton

I was able to recover the video file and it was made clear why ‘someone’ had deleted (or attempted to) that file. Not only did the video probably provide the best evidence for Herb that he wasn’t interfering, or obstructing, an investigation, but it also included some bonus footage. Officer Tignor is heard talking with someone on the phone about how “he took care of that problem really quick” and said, “Fuck him, he just wants to run his mouth,” when referring to the arrest of Herb. He also said, “If these people…” but is interrupted by whomever he was on the phone with; it would have been interesting to hear what Tignor was going to say.

In light of this information, I sought comment from Emily Tarbert and the Zanesville Police Department, via email. I even called Emily, but to this day have not received any comment or communication back from either. That’s why, as you’ll see in the video below, myself and DEO decided to wait outside the Zanesville Police Department during the change from 1st shift to 2nd shift. Our primary goal was to talk to Tignor because he was the one with the video camera in his possession, but we also sought comment from Officer Moore or Sgt. McCoy. McCoy is a 20 year veteran of the Zanesville Police Department, whom I had this conversation with after being released early from my contempt charge and whom I also blogged about after some of his posts on Facebook were brought to my attention, was the supervisor the night Herb was arrested. In fact, he transported Richie, who was arrested for yelling at Tignor while he took Herb to the police cruiser, to the city jail. While we waited to see one of the “ZPD Trio” – McCoy, Tignor and Moore as I’ve dubbed them – we were able to ask some of the other Zanesville Police officers if they’d seen the video and what thoughts they had on it. See video below.

That IMG_1371night, Moore had off and we were unable to locate Tignor or he was avoiding us. Since he has the luxury of parking in the back of the station, as well as taking his government funded cruiser home, it was hard to get a comment from him during shift change. It did allow us another opportunity to talk to some of the other ZPD officers, who aren’t able to hide in back and take government vehicles home.  Most were NOT interested in giving me any information, even their badge numbers, let alone their own thoughts on Herb’s deleted footage, but a few did. Officer Headers stated, “If that’s what happened,” in response to me asking if he thought the arrest was ‘messed up.’ Other ZPD officers stated they don’t mind being recorded and have come to accept it; hopefully that spreads because that didn’t seem to be Moore’s position when he told Herb, “We’re out here interviewing a female that claims she got raped and YOU’RE VIDEOTAPING US.” Notice how he didn’t say videotaping important information or accusations towards those being accused of a crime. Nope, he said, “And you’re videotaping US.”

It seems that Moore might be one of the few, as other ZPD officers were fine with people filming them, which made me think that maybe some of these guys were alright – that maybe, just maybe, the whole city government isn’t corrupt and willing to protect a few bad cops who delete footage, even if just mistakenly. Is the whole city apparatus willing to protect a few who made a mistake? Or who did this deliberately? Time will tell.

We decided to head down the Municipal Building in the morning. Our goal was to chalk the sidewalk all around the building to bring awareness to Herb’s case and the fact that someone in that building had attempted to destroy evidence. I knew it was unlikely, but we were hoping to finally get some answers. Instead, our freedom of speech fell victim to the Zanesville Fire Department’s tasks of keeping the sidewalk clean; seriously, see video below.

I guess my momentary thought that not all employees of the Zanesville City government were willing, or eager to, step on our rights went out the window when someone ordered the police, firefighters, and court bailiffs to stomp on ours so blatantly. Obviously, they complied and stood by to protect the firefighters, NOT first amendment rights that so many CopSuckers claim the police and military risk their lives for us to have, while they washed off the sidewalk. Heck, two Zanesville Police officers watched a woman dump half her Sprite drink into our chalk bucket. By law, that’s destruction of property, since that wasn’t her chalk and I’m the victim, but neither officer did anything about that – not that I wanted them to. Yet, it’s interesting to point out because chalking the sidewalk has no victim while destroying – or even attempting to – my property (and Herb’s video footage) does, yet the focus was on the sidewalk? Why?

Had we chalked, “We love the ZPD,” or, “ZPD is our favorite police,” would the hoses have come out? Probably not. This means that the hoses were sent out because someone didn’t like WHAT we were writing. This is an infringement on our right to freedom of speech, according to the laws the people in that very building claim to uphold; but, more importantly, IMO, it’s an attempt to hide the truth. If what we were saying was clearly a lie, if the police could prove they didn’t delete footage, then why not just provide the truth? Instead, they provided cops, bailiffs and firefighters to stomp all over my ability to provide truth. Furthermore, this seemed to upset the “Trio” who spent the next day early in their shift making several passes by Herb’s house. That’s how the video below came about, which provides another look into who is trying to provide truth versus those who are trying to hide it. Watch the video below and ask yourself, “Who’s hiding something here and why?”

I know the CopSuckers are all going to say that this will play out in court, that the police can’t talk during an open case and blah, blah. I know what excuses you have and I don’t care. Tignor and Moore arrested a man because they didn’t like that he would film and swear at them. Herb’s way might not be the best way to film police, but he’s still allowed to film police and he’s supposed to have freedom of speech. Even if you think Herb should have been arrested, the police still committed a crime when someone tampered with the evidence, but no one seems to care about that. No one seems to care that Tignor said, “Fuck him,” and Moore said, “After all you’ve been doing, you’re going to jail on this one.” Those two statements clearly show both officers were biased towards Herb. This is how you stomp out freedom of speech and accountability, Zanesville. banner-store

Herb has two upcoming court appearances. I know many of us plan to attend to show our support for Herb, filming the police, and to stand against corrupt cops. You can also join us at 8:00 am on June 2nd or 8:00 am on June 10th at the Zanesville Municipal Court (332 South St. Zanesville, OH 43701). Feel free to bring chalk, signs, and cameras! Oh, and the judge really likes when people wear hats into his courtroom. Maybe we can get 100 of us to show up and protest the illegal hat ban in the courtroom? Make the most out of this court appearance?

Back in April (2015) I was spending a decent amount of time in Zanesville, OH doing CopBlock outreach, CopBlocking (see video below), and helping fellow CopBlocker, Herb, get some accountability for his wrongful arrest. Thanks to those efforts, and the rise of Zanesville CopBlock, there are many eyes and ears on the ground in “Z-town” these day. Folks are just waiting to let us here at CopBlock.org know about every little mishap the Zanesville Police are up to on any given day. That’s why I was so happy when I woke up today to find the following submission to CopBlock.org.

A supporter of CopBlock, who lives in Zanesville, thought we’d be interested to hear that the local newspaper, who normally writes pro-police articles, recently pulled a Freedom of Information Request (FOIA) and found that several officers have been disciplined since the start of 2015. The reasons for disciplinary actions include write ups for excessive force, failure to appear in court and threatening CopBlockers. According to the Times Recorder:

The police department issued 12 disciplinary actions, including verbal and written reprimands, against patrol officers and corrections officers between January and mid-June.

Only eight of the department’s roughly 70 patrol and corrections officers were disciplined this quarter for various infractions. But though that’s only a fraction of the entire department, Miller said, it’s still vital to hold them accountable not only to their captains but to the public whom they’re charged with protecting.

“It’s done with the belief that this will solve this issue and any issues in the future,” Miller said. “If you don’t address it, you create an environment where it can actually get worse.”

Four of the disciplinary actions involved corrections officer Shane Stephens, who will serve a suspension without pay this month for an excessive use of force on an inmate in the city jail.

Stephens’ first written reprimand came in February for insubordination and misuse of the department’s equipment. Stephens had failed to properly secure his duty belt, which included his radio, handcuffs and keys.

When Jail Administrator Michelle Duke locked the belt in her office, Stephens “became extremely rude and disrespectful” and accused Duke of stealing his equipment, according to the report.

Stephens was given a written reprimand in June for an April Facebook post in which he threatened to cause “physical bodily harm to certain individuals if they were to ever be in our jail,” according to that report.

Because of Stephens’ post, the city jail is no longer able to house anyone involved with cop-blockers, a group of individuals who film their often-contentious interactions with police.

Police have not arrested any individuals associated with the group since then, but Miller said they would likely be held at the county jail if they are.

Days later, Stephens was involved in a physical fight with an inmate at the jail.

When Stephens entered the holding cell to give the inmate his breakfast, the inmate knocked the food from Stephens’ hands, according to the report. Stephens then hit the inmate in the face and neck. Other officers became involved to end the ensuing scuffle.

Stephens will serve a 10-day suspension later this month for the fight — which, Miller concluded in the report, could have been avoided.

A few patrol officers also have been disciplined since January for various offenses.

Among them is officer Jason Burke, who was reprimanded in May for missing an April court date, where he was to testify against a suspect charged with criminal damaging. The suspect was found not guilty, though City Law Director Scott Hillis said the case would have likely been won if Burke had been able to testify, according to the report.

Burke also was suspended for 20 days without pay in April after Miller learned that he had went gambling and drinking in Columbus when he was supposed to be on duty, according to that report.

Burke had first attempted to trade days with another officer, but when that didn’t go through, he instead called off sick, the report notes. He had even attempted to get a doctor’s note to validate his story, according to the report.

What’s the most troubling to me, since I’ve spent the night in the jail that’s no longer allowed to house CopBlockers for safety concerns, is the behavior of Shane Stevens. Stevens has been disciplined four time this year and most recently for assaulting an inmate. The assault happened after Stevens was given a ‘written’ warning for stating he’d do, “physical bodily harm to certain individuals [CopBlockers] if they were to ever be in our jail.” One can’t help but wonder- if the department knew of Steven’s violent mindset, then why didn’t they fire him in order to keep all inmates safe? How did they expect a written warning and discriminatory action (of sending CopBlockers to the County Jail) to solve the problem?

Maybe someone should contact the man Stevens assaulted in jail so that he can sue them (seriously, if you know his name, contact us). It seems the police department was fully aware of Steven’s aggressive behavior and thoughts but choose to ignore them. This put every single inmate he came into contact with at risk, and the lack of proper punishment by the Zanesville Police Chief is the reason Stevens was even able to put his hands on anyone. I would think that when a Corrections Officers publicly states they would initiate force on an inmate, they would be removed from that job 9 out of ten times, merely for the liability to the City if force was ever needed. Yet since Steven’s threat was against CopBlockers, whom are hated by most ZPD officers, the matter was overlooked.

Post from Sgt. McCoy's FB page in April

Post from Sgt. McCoy’s FB page in April

A few of us here at CopBlock have been working on gathering and sharing our own details of ZPD abusive actions, yet this article fails to mention those, probably because they weren’t investigated at all, since it was pesky CopBlockers who were wronged. Those actions included the wrongful arrest of Herb Newton, the illegal actions of Officer Tignor and the potential cover up that was (most likely) ordered by Patrol Sgt. Jon McCoy. Which brings up another case of mental instability, or at a minimum, another ZPD officer with violent thoughts. Back in April I blogged about McCoy, who liked to post aggressively focused meme’s on his Facebook page. Of course, he’s since taken it down, but not before I could capture the moments for eternity. Is McCoy the next loose cannon to go off in Zanesville?

If you’re a taxpayer in Zanesville you might want to pay attention. The police are giving their own kind slaps on the wrist, or merely turning a blind eye to the egregious and illegal actions of their own. This will end up costing taxpayers, and not the officers mentioned above. This is why you must film the police, this is why you must question their actions, because if you don’t they will sweep them under the rug and continue to put others at risk. Then at the end of the day the will pass the bill along to you. It’s time to wake up Zanesville, the stink is right under your nose.

Consider calling the Zanesville Police Department this week. Ask them why they employ violent individuals who tend to take actions into their own hands? Ask them why Shane Stevens is still employed by the City? Ask them why Tignor and McCoy are still on the streets harassing Herb on a daily basis?

Zanesville CopBlocker, Herb, Heads to Trial Over Bogus Charges from One ZPD Officer

Herb Newton has had more encounters with police than he cares to remember. This week he takes two of those encounters to court as the 50 year old, lifelong Zanesville [OH] resident, faces several charges issued by ONE Zanesville Police officer – Joel Tignor. Yes, both of Herb’s cases originated from Tignor who clearly has a hatred for Herb and you don’t have to take my word for it. In the video below, you can not only refresh your memory of Herb’s arrest, but you’ll hear Tignor in his own words state his distaste for Herb.

The fact that Herb’s charges are still pending go to show that the corruption in Zanesville extends past the police department. Or, at a bare minimum, those whom work for the city are willing to stand by their colleagues no questions asked. Even when their colleagues leave a video camera running for nearly 3 hours after an arrest – which is what Tignor did when he arrested Herb in the video above. This alone (not securing evidence for several hours) seems to be an action that should have gotten Tignor disciplinary action in the first place. Yet, it didn’t, and during the time Tignor was wiretapping himself he mentions on the phone to someone (his supervisor Jon McCoy possibly – who’s also a class act, click here) that he was tired of Herb’s actions (filming ). As I stated in the blog I published titled, “Zanesville Police Arrest Man for Filming and Freedom of Speech“:

Tignor seals the deal when he forgets to shut the camera off and is recording saying, “I took care of that problem quickly.” Followed up with, “Hey, fuck him… he wants to just run his mouth. I’m not having it. I’m tired of it.” Seems Tignor believes recording the police is a ‘problem’, that needs to be taken care of quickly, and that if you want to exercise your freedom of speech, by running your mouth, he’ll abuse his power as a police officer to jail you.

The video of the interaction and arrest alone, which shows Herb actually trying to help the alleged victim and the cops doing anything but (Tignor even shrugs it off stating, “a rape that happened yesterday.”), should be enough to clear Herb’s name, but with the additional commentary by Tignor I see no choice other than for Emily Tarbert to do what’s right by dropping the charges. The Zanesville police department should also consider investigating who tampered with the footage, because they suck at it and if they’re going to tamper with evidence they should do it properly. Or they could just stop arresting peaceful people, who are merely recording them (and at times telling them off, which is NOT a crime).

click banner to visit the CopBlock Store

Aside from Tignor’s abusive and aggressive nature towards Herb the facts of the matter in this case are simple. Herb was trying to leave the scene when Tignor told him to (even though he wasn’t legally required to) but wanted to get his bicycle first. Tignor overreacted, assaulted and arrested Herb for this. Later Tignor arrested Herb’s nephew – Richard – for merely voicing his opinion about the arrest – some call this freedom of speech. That can also be heard on video here.

(Read this post and watch the video above to get all the details of the first arrest)

Then, a little over a month ago, Tignor wrote Herb a ticket for flipping him off – something that Tignor himself does to Herb on a regular basis – but had other Zanesville police officers issue him the ticket. This charge is so ridiculous that I can’t believe the ZPD and courts are even wasting their time. As I stated in the post, “Zanesville PD Continue Harassment of CopBlocker:

It’s been clearly established by the Supreme Court that giving the police the finger is not a crime and  I would suspect the same ruling over actual speech. This further highlights, IMO, the contempt that Officer Tignor has for Herb. It should also be noted that Herb states that Tignor has been repeatedly driving by his house flipping off Herb. Yet, no one has issued Tignor a ‘disorderly’ conduct ticket.

These two (bogus) charges have been combined and Herb is scheduled for trial this Wednesday in Zanesville Municipal Court at 9am. If, or when, Herb is found guilty he may be subjected to a $100 fine – for ‘disorderly conduct’ (flipping off a cop – J. Tignor) and up to $1,000 fine – with as many as 6 months in jail – for the obstruction of justice charge (filming the police).

Seriously. What kind of justice is this? Who has Herb harmed to warrant such attention from those who work for the city?

If you watched the entire video above – of Herb’s first arrest – you know that he was respectful to the woman accused of stealing (who later claimed to be a rape victim). Even offering to take her to the hospital, and/or for help, that’s not something you can say for the Zanesville Police officers, both of which, were more focused on Herb than they were the actual crime (theft) they were called there for.  Yet, who was more respectful or helpful is not the question on the table. The questions at hand are how did Herb “obstruct justice” while filming the police and complying with their request? And how is giving someone – even a cop – the middle finger “disorderly conduct?”

Legally speaking these charges SHOULD be easy to beat. The video shows the Herb was complying with officers orders and attempting to leave the scene. Nevertheless, if the simple facts of the day’s events can’t free Herb, the FACT that the video WAS tampered with, or that the additional audio recording show officer bias toward Herb, should bring enough reasonable doubt to the table that no judge or jury should find him guilty.

Still, I expect Herb to be found guilty for three reasons. Those working for “Zanesville” have to 1) protect their own, 2) they dislike Herb and 3) they dislike “CopBlock.” They can’t let legal facts, tampering with evidence and police harassment get in the way of their hatred.

I doubt Herb’s case will lead to the end of their thuggish ways but I plan to let the ZPD (and city officials) know of my displeasure, while highlighting their actions and supporting Herb at his court date. So join us on Wednesday (Aug 12th) at 8:00 am for Herb’s trial at the Zanesville Municipal building (located at 332 South St, Zanesville, Ohio 43701). Bring your signs, cameras and (of course) chalk because the Zanesville City officials love chalk (see video below).

Also, on Tuesday night I’ll be in Zanesville, with other CopBlockers, CopBlocking the ZPD like we have in the past – see here. If you’d like to join us we’re going to meet up at the WalMart parking lot at 7 pm. Or message the Zanesville Ohio CopBlock page here.

Lastly, if you’re so inclined, consider calling the Zanesville Police department or City Attorney and ask them to stop harassing Herb.

Deo Free SpeechA few anti Cop Block people showed up for Herb’s trial in Zanesville. When Ademo and I got there, they wanted to talk. A few of them even thought that Ademo made some good points talking to them.

But then some of them showed up the next day at trial and the niceties went out the window. We had a woman named Deb that thinks that if it offends her it should be illegal. (That video will be coming soon, as well.)

Below you can see the raw video from the night before Herb’s trial and the semi-civil conversation that accompanied it. You’ll all be happy to know that nothing happened at the trial and Herb lives to record another day. Enjoy.

They then showed up at Herb’s trial full of piss and vinegar. The energy was much different from the night before. One of them came and asked us to watch our language with his copsucker niece around. I told him to keep her out of earshot of our free speech. Our rights are not to be curtailed because it hurts your feelings.

If you want to keep your niece safe from other people’s free speech, then stay in your home and do not watch television, listen to music, or read anything but old Mark Twain. Even with Twain there may be a shit or an ass in there somewhere. Even the bible you hold so near to your hearts has cuss words in it! More importantly, if her parents left her in your care and you are supposed to be the responsible guardian, and you are worried the parents will yell at you for exposing her to it, that is your fault! Act like the responsible adult you preach to everyone else to be and get the kid out of there!

In the end, I have the freedom to say what I want, when I want. If you don’t like that, I suggest you take the advice you give to us all the time and leave! Change of attitude and a message to Zanesville Copsucker Jeremy Starcher in the video below.

Officer Andrews Zanesville PD

Zanesville Police are at it again. This time it is officer Andrews of the Zanesville PD who doesn’t know the law he is supposed to be enforcing. In the video seen here, you will here officer Andrews detain a man, ask for ID, and then arrest the man for not identifying himself.

You can hear the officer pull up and ask, “what’s goin on man?” As if this is a friend of his or something. He then asks for ID which our videographer refuses to show. And rightly so. Officer Andrews, you seem to be familiar with the failure to identify law, but not how it is to be applied! ORC 2921:29 states quite clearly that you have to have a reason to identify someone in the first place. You had no reason. A man walking in his socks is not illegal or suspicious.(Not that suspicion is enough even!)

ORC 2921:2- Failure to disclose personal information.

(A) No person who is in a public place shall refuse to disclose the person’s name, address, or date of birth, when requested by a law enforcement officer who reasonably suspects either of the following:

(1) The person is committing, has committed, or is about to commit a criminal offense.

(2) The person witnessed any of the following:

(a) An offense of violence that would constitute a felony under the laws of this state;

(b) A felony offense that causes or results in, or creates a substantial risk of, serious physical harm to another person or to property;

(c) Any attempt or conspiracy to commit, or complicity in committing, any offense identified in division (A)(2)(a) or (b) of this section;

(d) Any conduct reasonably indicating that any offense identified in division (A)(2)(a) or (b) of this section or any attempt, conspiracy, or complicity described in division (A)(2)(c) of this section has been, is being, or is about to be committed.

(B) Whoever violates this section is guilty of failure to disclose one’s personal information, a misdemeanor of the fourth degree.

(C) Nothing in this section requires a person to answer any questions beyond that person’s name, address, or date of birth. Nothing in this section authorizes a law enforcement officer to arrest a person for not providing any information beyond that person’s name, address, or date of birth or for refusing to describe the offense observed.

(D) It is not a violation of this section to refuse to answer a question that would reveal a person’s age or date of birth if age is an element of the crime that the person is suspected of committing.

Effective Date: 04-14-2006

As you can see there has to be suspicion a crime has been committed, is about to be committed, or witnessed a crime. Walking around in your socks trolling cops does not fall into either of these categories. Oh, did I forget to mention, right before this video was shot, the videographer recorded himself telling a state police officer to leave! You can see that video here.

This seems an awful lot like this man was targeted by one cop for trolling another. Zanesville cops sure haven’t learned a thing since we have been visiting them. This is why we record your officers. This is why your officers can not be trusted. This is why you should be weary of them as well. We are not making this stuff up. This video represents a clear reason why everyone in Zanesville should be recording these crooked ass cops!

Congratulations to Patrick Solomon who recorded this video. He has court on September 22, 2015 at 8:45am. Give Zanesville police a call and ask if it is illegal to not identify yoursaelf to an officer. See if they tell you the truth. Then ask why they arrested Patrick and if they plan to drop the bogus charges levied against him. Ask if Officer Andrews will be receiving retraining on the Failure to identify law. Here’s the information for Zanesville Police.
